The Top 3 Most Common Packaging Mistakes eCommerce Stores Make

November 15, 2021

In today’s world of modern, post-pandemic business, SMEs have had to adapt to the eCommerce world quickly and efficiently. Where before you could rely on in-person sales and pick-ups, many customers are shopping solely online and expect their items to be delivered safely to their door.

As a result, almost all business owners have to navigate the world of shipping domestically and internationally. But what many business owners may gloss over is their packaging products. The first impression you make on a customer is the arrival of their items, both the box itself and the state of the items inside. The last thing you need is for your items to arrive broken, or for the packaging to be falling apart upon arrival. Your reputation is at risk if this happens.

The team at Jetbox have narrowed down the top 3 packaging mistakes eCommerce businesses make, to help ensure you and your business avoid them in future. Read on for our tips and tricks!

Common Mistake #1: Choosing Packaging Materials that Aren’t Made to Last

Positive first impressions start with choosing the right packaging. The right materials for your business may be different from others, but there are a few key factors that are always the same; quality, durability and style. It isn’t uncommon for businesses to purchase a large bulk of cheap, flimsy boxes without a second thought. However, this may lead to future damage as not all cardboard is made the same, especially cardboard that is made cheaply overseas.

Your boxes may be put under a lot of strain throughout their journey, being put underneath heavy boxes and moved around between many locations; your products need to be protected from the beginning of their journey to arriving in your customers hand. Boxes that are weak, or thin, are also at higher risk of being damp or having rain seep through, whereas a quality box with ample packaging fill is more likely to keep your products dry and safe.

It is important to purchase your boxes from a reputable, Australian source – like Jetbox. We have over 10 years of box manufacturing experience, and our mission is and always has been to offer quality and affordable boxes for all businesses.

As a business owner, you also need to consider the quality and durability of your packaging materials, such as tape, filler and mailers. Buying thin or weak bubble wrap, butchers paper or tape increases the risk of your items arriving broken. Consider the customer experience when purchasing your boxes and other packaging items, to ensure the most positive unboxing experience.

Common Mistake #2: Using the Incorrect Type of Packaging Tape for eCommerce

It is likely that you use tape for a multitude of functions. From taping up boxes and mailers, to sealing shipping labels and adding extra protection to fragile items. The way you tape up your boxes, and the quality of tape you use, is paramount to the safe transport and arrival of your products.

By sourcing your packaging tape from an expert box manufacturer, like Jetbox, you can quantee the tape is trusted by professionals and is made to last. We sell packaging tape in a number of quantities; be sure to visit our website to see the entire range!

Common Mistake #3: Providing Inadequate Protection For Your Fragile eCommerce Items

Once you have found a quality box manufacturer, you need to consider what you use as packing fill. Your packing fill, or fillers, are another key part of keeping your items snug and protected inside their box; without them, your items are at risk of being tossed around, squashed or otherwise damaged. This is especially true for fragile, or oddly shaped, items.

Instead of using flimsy bubble wrap or paper, or skipping out on packing filler altogether, consider other options such as bio-fill, butchers paper or high-quality bubble wrap. If your boxes are travelling long distances, or in bleak weather, wrapping them in stretch wrap is another way to protect them.

How To Pack Your TV Box

We understand that packing TV’s without the original packaging can be a stressful task.

Every Jetbox TV will be supplied with more than enough bubble wrap to wrap any size TV!

To put your TV box together, follow these instructions:

  1. Please start by taping the bottom of the box – pre-fold the flaps to make it easier to close.

  2. Use a blanket to cover your TV before applying bubble wrap.

  3. Lay it down (if the manufacturer recommendations specify that you can) and wrap it in bubble horizontally.

  4. Then wrap again vertically ensuring the corners, front and back are covered well. Tape up the bubble so that it doesn’t come undone.

  5. You can then slide the TV into the box, make sure it fits snugly and close the box with some strong tape.

Bulky Item Delivery Terms & Conditions

Some of our products are large, heavy and bulky and require extra care or special shipping. If your order requires a forklift we will advise before delivery, and if no forklift is available upon delivery a surcharge will apply.

Bulky deliveries that require hand delivery (but no forklift) to the first floor or above and require stair or lift access will also be subject to a delivery surcharge. If you advise at checkout that your delivery is above the ground floor, we will be in touch regarding the surcharge. This surcharge is from $50 per pallet.

Over & Under Runs

Manufacturing processes require machinery to work at quite high speeds. During production, some sheets may be damaged and need to be replaced. In some instances, we cannot replace the sheets at that time and you will be met with a slightly lower Quantity than ordered. This amount will be credited to you.

In most cases though, there will be overruns, as the machinery cannot come to a complete stop in an instant – we require a gradual slow down, which will give us more cartons produced, than what are ordered. These overruns are payable by the client. And taking them also helps save on recycling, which is more sustainable and better for the Environment in the long term.

If you require EXACT Quantities, we may have to make some boxes in a different grade than ordered, to make up your order in the Exact Qty required. These requests will also Incur higher unit costs. This cannot be avoided, as we must consider the recycling processes and costs involved, in helping to reduce our carbon footprint.
